Motty Take the Roof off at the Tavern

Motty performed "Hurry Up England" at the Circus Tavern this Sunday. (St Georges Day).

They band were on at around 11:30pm and their electric performance was cheered on by everyone at the venue. Motty came on shortly before the Cockney Rejects. the band took to the stage decked out in Red & White. Jon Sayer led the way with by far the best vocal performance of the evening. Mickey Dunne on drums, The A-Man Andre Evans on bass, Pat Mogger on guitar and Matty on keyboard, and Lee Cannon on backing vocals gave, to a man, as true rock n roll a performance as i'd seen in a long long time.

Daily Star Article

Motty's Sheepskin got a mention in today's daily star. The article, Back of the Net, by james wickham (about page 10) lists 6 of the best England World Cup Anthems to look out for this summer.

James speaks favorably of all songs mentioned and Motty is listed as being a great patriotic song yet because it's competing against the likes of Joe Fagin might not necessarily be the song that is being sung in the pubs. (they should have been at the crown at the weekend)

Email james at james.wickham@dailystar.co.uk and have your say for Motty. Just a few lines will do along the lines of i've heard Motty's Sheepskin's version of Hurry up England and it is fantastic. (Words to that effect). Oh ... and lets keep it clean folks. (for the meantime anyway ;-))

who is brett?

It was a Virgin radio producer who first told Motty of the mysterious Brett character.
PRODUCER: Jimmy came into the Virgin yesterday and between you and me he looked a blooming wreck.
MOTTY’S SHEEPSKIN: That’s nothing A good friend of ours told us he that Jimmy was looking for all the world like Pete Doherty’s great granddad.
PRODUCER: He’s right. Jimmy didn’t speak much and what he did say I couldn’t understand him. No, it was this shady looking character that was with him who did most of the talking. Went by the name of Brett.
MOTTY'S SHEEPSKIN: Who is Brett?

A SOHO BAR – SEVERAL DAY SLATER

Gentlemen ha ha Jimmy Purcey is talking nonsense in a pub with Motty’s Sheepskin who are doing their best not to strangle the daft old fool.

JIMMY: (screaming) It’s Brett’s fault this mess! It wasn't my fault! I didn’t even want to release the poxy song. It was Brett. He made me record it. He said if I didn’t he’d sling me out of his grandmothers house.

Apparently Jimmy was staying with Brett’s grandma whilst in between caravans.

Who is the mysterious Brett? Does anybody know? If you do please leave a message in the comments section at the bottom of this post.

the story

A few months back a talented band of musicians out of Romford Essex reformed to make an England World Cup Anthem with all proceeds going to a Cancer Charity close to their hearts. They took the name Mottys Sheepkin and recorded HURRY UP ENGLAND – an explosive, revamped version of Sham 69’s original ‘Hurry up Harry.’

The band then approached Sham’s Jimmy Purcey and asked permission to put the song out officially. Jimmy agreed.

Motty, thrilled that they could push ahead with their charity song, were totally unprepared for what happened next. Several days later, on his Virgin Radio Breakfast Show Christian O’Connell played a version of Hurry Up England by … wait for it … Jimmy Purcey of Sham 69.

Motty were gutted by this unexpected turn of events. They might have quit right there but for one overriding factor … Motty were never in this for themselves. At no point were they looking for Kudos or money or a record deal. They were doing this for the people they loved and in support of a very worthy cause. Quitting was never an option.

After their initial disappointment Motty picked themselves up and decided to hell with it – they’d put their version out anyway. What they needed was a label willing to risk going up against Virgin Radio. What followed was a chaotic, oddball fortnight of ups and downs, frustrating meetings, phone calls, emails and text-mails etc until eventually Motty finally got their break.

It came via a journalist friend of the band who had been supporting them since day one. He introduced the band to Cadiz, an Independent record label, who agreed to release Motty’s version of Hurry up England.

And so there will be 2 versions of Hurry Up England. Their will be the Virgin Radio/Jimmy Purcey Version. And their will be Motty’s version that we have believe to be the Real Unofficial Anthem.

Motty are under no illusions they have a fight on our hands going up against a huge radio station like Virgin Radio, especially with Jimmy Purcey on board. This is going to be a real David and Goliath battle. Bottom line is Motty want to make as much money as possible for their charity.

Do listen to both songs and decide for yourself which is best. We urge you to do that.

I for one know which version I’ll be buying.
